Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union Welcoming the inauguration of the Transitional Federal Government in Somalia

COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION EN Brussels, 8 December 2024 15887/04 (Presse 355) P 137/04 (OR. en) Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union Welcoming the inauguration of the Transitional Federal Government in Somalia

The European Union welcomes the outcome of the Somali National Reconciliation Conference and in particular the cohesiveness shown by Somali leaders and IGAD member states and their resolve to adopt a common approach based on political consensus. The EU expresses its gratitude in particular towards the Kenyan authorities for their exceptional support to the Reconciliation Conference.

The European Union reassures all parties in the process of their continued close commitment to reconciliation in Somalia and reiterates its support for the Transitional Federal Authorities.

The European Union believes that the inauguration of a Transitional Federal Government is an important step towards the establishment of sustainable peace, stability and central authority in Somalia, but emphasizes that much work still lies ahead if this objective is to be achieved. 15887/04 (Presse 355) 2

The European Union stresses the need for the Transitional Federal Government to engage with the international community according to arrangements to be agreed upon and urges it to use its mandate constructively for the purposes of reconciliation and reconstruction. The EU stands ready to help support the safe return and establishment of the Transitional Federal Institutions in Somalia. Furthermore, the European Union will assist the Somali authorities in enhancing security and development in Somalia.
